The South Dunedin Community Pop Up facility being established in the Cargill Enterprises building at 199 Hillside Road South Dunedin will be officially opened by the Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull on Friday 8 September. A programme of events around the opening is being developed with the South Dunedin community and will be publicised leading up to the opening date.
Closely following the opening, a weekly Justice of the Peace service will be available in the Pop Up from 11.00am to 1.00pm commencing from Tuesday 12 September. A regular community law clinic is also being explored and will be publicised when confirmed.
The South Dunedin Community Pop Up will include community spaces and offer free Gig wifi, free public access to the Internet, Council Service Centre functions and a fully functional branch of the Dunedin Public Libraries. The Pop Up will be open a total of 25 hours each week as follows:
- Tuesday 11.00am – 4.00pm
- Wednesday 11.00am – 5.30pm
- Thursday 11.00am – 4.00pm
- Friday 11.00am – 5.30pm
- Saturday 10.00am – 12.00pm
A Council Community Development Officer, Nick Orbell will be based at the Pop Up for some of his time and a ‘Community Hot Desk’ will be established at the Pop Up where community groups can promote their activities to the wider community on a rotational basis.
The South Dunedin Community Pop Up will also provide a focal point for the community to provide feedback and input into the development of the permanent South Dunedin Community Hub.
It is intended that the Pop Up facility will remain in place for approximately two years during the development of the permanent South Dunedin Community Hub. Following the opening of the Pop Up, Council attention will turn to the establishment of the permanent facility.
The operation of the South Dunedin Community Pop Up will complement the existing community housie operation.
